Joe Bavier JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - African finance ministers want International Monetary Fund, World Bank and EU support for bilateral, multilateral and commercial debt relief amid the coronavirus crisis, the UN Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) said. Africa is facing a perfect storm of an impending global economic downturn, plummeting oil and commodity prices and weaker currencies which threaten to imperil its coronavirus response.
Algerian president pardons over 5,000 prisoners (1)
Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Wednesday pardoned 5,037 prisoners. The Presidency said that those convicted of terrorism, treason, espionage, murder, asset killing, poisoning, drugs, misdemeanor, rape, and felonies are excluded from the pardon. Earlier in February, the Algerian president pardoned 10,000 prisoners, the highest ever in the country. The statement did not say if the pardon was linked with stemming the coronavirus outbreak.
