"Killing sprees" in Iran and Iraq have caused a sharp global spike in the number of executions carried out in 2013, said Amnesty International in its latest report on death penalties and executions, released Thursday (March 27). The 15% rise comes at odds with a steady decline in the use of capital punishment around the world over the last two decades.
